Guy Cater is a Kiwi, born and raised in Howick but now lives with his wife, Cynthia, in West Auckland. He has been performing professionally for over 30 years; beginning his show business career as a children's magic clown ... Happy the Hobo, then moving into compere and comedy work.

He gained a Diploma of Clinical Hypnotherapy in 1980 but decided that that lifestyle was not for him and began using his hypnotic skills within his Comedy Act and then into a full evening show.

Over his years in the industry, Guy Cater has received many awards ...

1981: Best Children's Entertainer ... 17th New Zealand Magic Convention.
1983: Merit Award from Northern Entertainment Operators Association of New Zealand.
1986: Scroll of Honour from the New Zealand Variety Artists Club.
1987: Professional Performer Award from The New Zealand Star Academy.
1991: Top Comedian Award ... NZ Variety Artists Club.
1992: Most Versatile Entertainer Award from the 'Inside Entertainment' magazine.
1993: The Reilly Comedy Award.
1995: The Golden Benny ... (The most prestigious Award of The NZ Variety Artists Club).
1997: Awarded Life Membership of Variety Artists Club and inducted into their Hall of Fame.
2007: The Agnew Award for Excellence.

THE BIG NIGHT OUT

In late October, close to 200 customers and suppliers joined us for a night of good food and wine and a lot of entertainment. Wow - what an evening....
I can give you a first hand account of the amazing powers of Hypnotist Guy Cater.

After demonstrating to us the power of the mind, by getting 4 audience members to lift Mike (from 3M) out of his chair using only their fingertips - I was enthusiastic to see how it felt to be hypnotised. Guy assured the audience that the show would be fun and user friendly so I made the rash decision to give it a go...how many other chances could I get to embarrass myself in front of colleagues and customers in one hit??!!

Soon the empty chairs gradually filled with volunteers. We were made to concentrate on our clenched fists to be brought down to a state of deep relaxation...and it was all go from there. From being the best musical instrument players in the world, to seeing crowd members naked- it was all happening!
We saw funny movies, sad movies and even dirty movies! Dean from Wipertec did a stunning Elvis impersonation and Jane, one of our key customers, gave Britney Spears a run for her money - but the show was stolen by Christchurch Branch manager Craig Harman - who convinced the crowd "he felt like a woman" Shania Twain Style with panache!

Then it was into the crowd to do the Village People's YMCA and conduct an orchestra- very rousing stuff! Amongst this mix was a James Bond - stalking the audience in search of would be terrorists!!

The finale of the night was having Tony Yaxley on stage - being told in no uncertain terms how dis-pleased the hynotised participants were, having found an unpleasant dog leftover on their chairs, seemingly planted there by him...the grovelling after that was priceless!

It was a fabulous experience - I felt elated afterwards - really fresh and re-vitalised...if ever you have the chance to go under - I recommend it ! Hats off to those Suppliers who sponsored a table - it was a great night!
